Cut, stack and flip

Download the 12-card flipbook (PDF)

  1. Print the one-page sheet single-sided on US Letter. For A4, select “fit to page.” The cards use the same scale throughout.
  2. Cut the dashed rectangles. Stack card 01 on top, followed by 02 through 12. Keep the numbers upright and align the shaded tabs on the left.
  3. Hold the tabs together with a clip. Turn the right edges so card 01 gives way to 02, then 03. If the runner goes from ceiling to floor, reverse the order you reveal the cards.
What gives the flip its sense of speed?

Compare frames 04–06 with 07–09. The vertical distance grows between successive drawings while the horizontal step stays even. By frame 10 the runner touches the upper rail and the remaining cards carry it sideways. To draw a slower flip, add intermediate frames where the vertical gaps are largest.

Tap to reverse gravity in Fluxo

This illustration was made for paper and uses its own frame positions. In Fluxo, a tap reverses gravity as the runner moves between the floor and ceiling of a neon tunnel.
