The moonwalk clock desk
Rebuild five moments from Apollo 11’s first moonwalk. The records use two clocks. Put them in order, then calculate how long the television audience waited to see the first step.
Which event came first?
Clock alignment
Mission elapsed 109:00:00 = 02:32:00 UTC. For an elapsed reading of 109:10:00, add ten minutes to 02:32:00.

One more piece of evidence
NASA puts the first clear TV picture at 02:54:00 UTC and Armstrong’s first step at 02:56:15 UTC. How much time passed?
Read the answer key and check the sources
All five entries are on July 21 in UTC. The hatch opened at 02:39:33. Armstrong was fully outside on the porch at 02:51:16. The first clear TV picture arrived at 02:54:00. His first step followed at 02:56:15, and collection of the contingency sample began at 03:05:58. A clear picture arriving and a person setting foot on the surface are separate events.
The record slips paraphrase NASA’s Apollo 11 timeline. Its mission summary also gives the first step as July 20 at 10:56 p.m. US Eastern daylight time. That is the same instant as July 21 at 02:56 UTC. The times on the slips are recorded events, distinct from planned times in a flight plan.
